Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My landlord demanded that my family vacate our residence yesterday so that he could have an appraisal done on the property to modify his home loan. He then proceeded to bring his "wife" who is not legal owner of the residence and did not sign the lease agreement into our residence. They thereafter took my photographs off of the walls and tables and put them in my children's closets. When I came home many of my personal possessions were not put back and drawers were open. My landlord stated he had to remove wedding pictures, etc. because his modification requirements state the property must be his primary residence. I feel violated. He is committing fraud. He says that I need to ask before I hang things on the wall. What he did was illegal was it not?

What he did was a trespass. Unfortunately you don't have any measureable damages.
