Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

landlord says ''no overnight guests'' after signing lease

I signed a six-month lease that does not stipulate no overnight guests. When a friend came and spent the night, my landlords became enraged and demanded that I had no right to have overnight guests. Also, they have entered my unit more than once without notice. Do I have reason to be released from my lease?

I'm not sure about being released from your lease, but you certainly have a problem with the LL barging into your unit. That is a breach of your peace and quiet enjoyment, as well as trespass. You should re-read the lease carefully for any language that has anything to do with guests. You might find something, and if not, then your LL has no grounds to complain. In either case, you are entitled to use the premises as you see fit, provided your use does not breach the lease, damage the property or otherwise conflict with normal use. Good luck.
