Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
My landlord and property managment company have refused to fix a broken window in my apartment. The window was broken during the night, I believe due to a severe tempurature change. Nothing hit the window.
I have been trying to get them to fix it for 3 months now. Can I have the window fixed myself and take the cost of the repairs out of the rent? Or is there something else I can do to get them to fix the window ASAP? This isnt safe.

For a quick resolution, contact the local housing authority. They often will intervene in landlord-tenant matters that involve basic code violations. If not, there is a procedure for making the repair yourself and deducting it from rent, but you must give written notice to the landlord, an opportunity for him to fix it, and the procedures are very, very specific. Search this forum as the procedure has previously been detailed (in terms of how many notices, the format they should take, etc...). Search for repair and deduct.
