Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Landlord refuses to fix apartment because I'm gay.
My landlord refuses to fix the lighting and plumbing in my apartment and when I ask him numerous times to do so he tells me he wants me to leave and calls me derogatory terms like fag. I'm really getting mad and I want to know if I have a legal case and if so what laws he has broken. Thank you.

Re: Landlord refuses to fix apartment because I'm gay.
He has violated Civil Code sections 51-52, the Unruh Civil Rights Act. A business (including a landlord) cannot discriminate because of the usual characteristics, including sexual orientation. Do you believe he's just dragging his feet and using the epithets when he gets made, or do you think he's not fixing things because you're gay? In any case, he's violating the law. I'd be happy to help you out if you drop me a line with the necessary information. By the way, are you current with the rent?
