Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Is Landlord responsible belongings stolen from house I rent a room in
My college daughter rents a bedroom in a house. The house was broken into and her laptop and digital cameras were stolen. Is the landlord responsible in any way for these items? I (her mom) actually pay the rent to the owner of the house. His daughter also lives in the house. We have no written rental agreement.

Usually, a landlord is not responsible for theft unless it's specifically stated in a written lease. If you don't have renter's insurance, you're most likely out of luck. If you're sure there was actually a break-in and it was not a cover for the landlord's daughter to steal you daughter's electronics, then purchase some renter's insurance and stay there until the semester ends, then find another place to live. Good luck.
