Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Is the landlord responsible for tenant utilities?

My tenant lost his job. If he pays the rent, but not the

utilities, am I responsible for the utilities bills. Does this

vary from state to state? Will the utility company come

after me? Thank you.

Re: Is the landlord responsible for tenant utilities?

In California, tenants are normally responsible for the utilitys + the rent unless the rental agreement says otherwise. The utility companies will come after whoever is on the account and that is why most landlords require the tenant to get the utilities in their own name.

If the renter is required to pay the utilities but is not, this might be a breach of the rental agreement just like failing to pay rent. Feel free to contact my office if you wish to come in for a consultation.
