Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

landlord/tenant

My ex landlord contacted my husbands employer (of which the landlord is a top account) and told him that we were tryin to screw him out of our last months rent and putting my husbands job at risk. Can he do that? or is that slander?

Re: landlord/tenant

Its only slander if it is not true. Freedom of speech in the US makes libel and slander lawsuits not real easy to pursue. You may have other rememdies under other consumer protection laws, but filing a suit for slander is probably not cost-effective to resolve what has transpired. You also need to look at what his damages are - was he fired? Did he lose any income as a result of this? If not, then he has no damages to claim in a defamation lawsuit. You should consult with a consumer attorney to determine if any claims exist under laws such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, et al.
