late fees

are late fees legal in California? and if so how much can you charge?

Late fees are illegal, unless covered by a provision in the lease. So, read your lease carefully.

Problem: landlords still charge late fees, and, unfortunately, many judges refused to declare them illegal, despite California Code to the contrary.

I, obviously, do not know if you are a tenant or landlord, but the answer is the same.

If you are a tenant, I would suggest having an attorney write a letter to landlord, concerning the illegality. It just may help.
