Laws of hidden recording devices

While renting a room in someone's apartment, what are the laws of them using hidden cameras and recording devices in the room you rent?

Such devices are absolutely prohibited without your prior knowledge, permission or consent.Their existence arguably make the premises uninhabitable, which could be the basis for a defense against eviction and a basis for a lawsuit for invasion of privacy, etc.
