Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Lawsuit Won
Within the last year, I won a lawsuit for $200 from my former landlord. He still refuses to return my deposit. What would the next step be, if I am straining financially already?

If you have old checks you wrote or make inquiry of your bank, you can discover where you landlord banked. Then you can instruct the sheriff to levy against his bank account and/or to collect rents on your behalf until you're paid. It'll initially cost you some money, but the sheriff might reimburse you from the money it collects.

Mr. Cohen has given you the simplest and most expeditious way to proceed.
If you know property that he still owns, or if he owns a vehicle, you can also attach said property. If he works, you can also attach his pay check.
All of these will cost something to pursue the legal aspect, but you can also collect interest.
You might want to enlist the aid of a local collection agency. They are experienced with such matters, but may charge as much as 50%. Compare costs with various collectors.
