Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

lease broke

I thought that if a landlord let someone else move in that would automaticaly void the contract. I saw this on one of the court shows. The landlord let someone else move in and would not take my daughter off the lease.

At least in California, the tenant is obligated for the term of the lease unless the landlord agrees to release her.
