Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Can I get out of a lease if there was a drive by shooting in the apartment complex? Bullets were put in cars & the building and someone was shot & killed.

From the limited facts provided, it is not possible to provide you with a concrete answer. Yes, the shooting might be a factor in allowing you to terminate a lease, but if it was a random act of violence, and was not forseeable, then it alone is probably not sufficient to allow you to break the lease. You also have to look at the area in which the apartment complex is located. There are a lot of factors one would have to look at - including a review of the lease itself - to determine if you have sufficient grounds to terminate the lease. I would suggest contacting a tenant's rights attorney in your area to discuss the facts of the matter.
