lease problem
When a new owner bought our duplex, he brought a lease which did not show the deposit I paid to the original owner. My name was spelled wrong, also. Then he acted like he does not speak English well. Am I correct in thinking that my first rental agreement is proof for any new owner that I have indeed paid a rental deposit that should still carry over with the new building sale?

When he bought the house he assumed all the debts and obligations for the house. Your prior lease is still the one that is in force, not the one he brought you. He also has to return the security deposit once you leave unless he can show damages you caused. Even if the former owner did not give him the security deposit, the new owner is still liable for it [he can then sue the old owner for that sum back] Once the term of the original lease runs out, he can refuse to renew it unless you accept certain changes. If you are in a rental control city his hands are tied as to what he can do.
