Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

lease termination due to death of leasee

my son passed away and the landlord of his apartment insists that the amendment to the original lease that my son signed is valid through the duration of the lease term and that I am liable for paying rent until apartment is re-leased. I co-signed original lease term of year but was not party to subsequent years amendments extending the term of the lease. I question the legitimacy of landlords claim for rent

Depending on what the documents actually say, I think you are probably right. If you agreed to co-sign for a specific term, you are off the hook once that term is over. Ask the landlord why he thinks you have any obligation.
