Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
leasing a house
I live in a house under verbal aggreement paying rent every month. I recently received a notice saying the house was going to auction in 17 days . The landlord is not giving any information. What are my rights and how long do I have to stay in the house? What do I do?

Follow Mr. Moerbeek's advice.
Re: leasing a house
The seventeen day period is close to the beginning of May. I'd wait and find out who the owner is after the sale to pay any rent (subject to my suggestions below), since the bulk of the month will be after the scheduled sale date. There is no point paying someone who will be out of ownership in a few days.
Check with the deed of trust trustee's office about the status of the sale. If the sale goes forward, and the lender ends up owning the house, see if you can get a written deal to rent it from the new owner before paying anything. Otherwise, the new owner will be serving you with a notice to quit the property. Once you get such a notice, no matter how it's served, contact a lawyer right away to make sure about your rights and obligations.
