i was left an unlawful detainer on my front porch, what is the next step

You will have to file an answer or motion to quash service of summons and complaint within 5 days of the alleged service. If you don't do that, the landlord could take a default against you and receive a judgment. Then you'll be evicted and perhaps be obligated to pay a money judgment.
