Is this legal for my landlord to make me leave my home to remodel? I live in California btw.

I would need more information to give you a very accurate answer. However, in many cases the answer is yes: a landlord can make you leave to remodel if they follow the rules of landlord/tenant law in California. For example, are they going to pay for a hotel/motel for you to stay?
More factual detail is required to properly advise you. It is not clear whether this is a cosmetic remodel or a remodel because of major damage or habitability problems. You do not indicate whether you are in a lease for a fixed term, or month to month. You have provided no facts as to how long you have lived in the property, whether it is a single family house or an apartment that may be subject to rent control, and what types of notices you have been served.
