Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Liability for Utilities

My roommates and I vacated a house we rented for the summer believing the landlords, who were using the place, would transfer the utility bill to their name. They didnt, and continued to use the utilities, and did not notify me that bills were coming to the house in my name. I did not find out until I saw on my credit report that the bills had gone into collection. Do I have any recourse against my landlords to recoup the cost of the utility fees they incurred after we moved out?

Re: Liability for Utilities

Yes. Of course, you first have to pay the bills. Then you can send the landlord a letter with a copy of the bills demanding the money and give them a time limit to pay. If they don't pay by then, the only alternative is small claims court.
