i live in ca and i received an unlawful detainer that was later dismissed before it went to trial. am i entitled to my security deposit back?

You need to provide more information. You can only get a security deposit back if you are no longer living there; even if you left without being forced out by a UD, may may still have caused damages that the landlord is entitled to keep all or part of the deposit.
