Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

i live in C.A. and rented a home for 2 1/2 years our rent was late the landlord put a 3 day pay or quit notice on our door changed the locks and filed it abandoned with all of our belongings in it. when we contacted her she first told me i would not be able to get any of my belongings and then said she would have it all put on the curb. i called the sherriffs and they said they would have to put my belongings in the garage. now i have many of my possesions stolen a computer jewlry clothing cell phones cameras family pictures and more. we were never evicted never given time to get our things out and all because we were 2 weeks late on rent. i still have the lights and water on in my name at that house. what are my rights and how do i try to recover my stolen property?

Did you get evicted from the landlord's self help, or was there an actual unlawful detainer court case filed against you that you did not oppose or do anything about?
