Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I lived with an ex boyfriend and a couple friends, for about a year and moved out four months before the lease was up. I paid two out of four months worth of rent due to the fact that my new home was burglarized. The room mates verbally agreed to cover me and my ex did not accept my inability to pay rent. Now he's saying he will remove me from the lease and take the money i put down for his and my deposit. He says he will do this because i did not pay the last two months of rent. What can i do and can he do this?

Sue him in small claims court.
