Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I lived in a privately owned condo on a month to month lease with 4 people. I moved out of the condo oct 21 2012. I informed the landlord 30 days prior, per our agreement. A new lease was drawn up afterwards with the new tenants. My portion of the security deposit was 665. My old roommates, the new tenants, left two months later without paying their lasts month rent. Because of this now the landlord says my portion of the security deposit can not be returned. Is there anything I can do?

You should consider filing a Small Claims action against the landlord and your former roommates. If there was a new lease, there was possibly a transfer of the security deposit funds to the new agreement, but as you were not part of the new agreement, you should be refunded your share of the deposit. Ths may also be a good case to consider for mediation.
