Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I have been living in a single unit rental for the past 5 years, I occupy the upstairs and another family member occupies the downstairs. Recently I have had to give temporary housing to my grandson and my landlord wants an additional $300 a month. My sister who occupies the downstairs unit has had her boyfriend living with her (with the landlords full knowledge and acceptance) for the last 3 years and has never asked for any additional money. Is this discrimination? I would appreciate any advice you may be able to give me. Thank you.

Without having researched this issue for you, since that's what I get paid for, I can tell you that this certainly smells of illegal discrimination. There are certainly laws that prohibit discrimination in renting housing to people with children in their households. So I would be surprised if a landlord could discriminate in the amount of rent charged instead.
I suggest you contact San Joaquin Fair Housing (http://sjfh.homestead.com/) for assistance.
