Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Mold Issue

I moved in beginning of March of this year. A month into our rent, we found out there was a mold problem in the bathroom and bedroom; a do-it-yourself kit confirmed our suspicions when my boyfriend developed a sinus infection and I woke up to sever allergic reactions every morning. When I called the landlord and told him about this, he eventually got a bathroom ventilation fan installed.

Its been 2 months since the fan has been installed and we sprayed the bathroom down with grapefruit seed extract(to kill mold). I believe its come back because ''allergies'' kick up everytime I am around the bathroom for a while. The only reason I havent gotten another at home kit to test for this is because I am wondering if I should just get a mold inspector to come in. I've also noticed that our toilet is leaking puddles onto our bathroom floor, as well as our bathtub. I called our landlord about this about a month and a half ago. He said he would replace our toilet for us and check the tub. Ever since a month and a half ago, he hasnt returned any of my phone calls(I've called about 6 or 7 times and have left messages).

What is the best, most effective way for me to resolve this? Im sick of being sick and waiting.

Re: Mold Issue

Call your local building and health inspectors.

If they confirm how serious the problem is, you are on your way.

In situations like this, I find more often than not it pays to retain an attorney to write a serious demand letter to the landlord.

Let me know what the results of the inspectors are, and we'll start with the next steps then.
