Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

About three months ago, a friend started hanging out at my place and asked if he could stay over for a few nights. A few nights turned into a few weeks, and now he has been here nearly three months. I never received a penny from him, he has no job and no money, and I see no sign that he ever will. I asked him to leave, giving him 5-10 days to make the move. He has told me that he is invoking his "right of occupancy" and that he will need 6 months to find another place to live. I need to leave the country in five days (Wed Sept 2) for five days. I need to know if I have any recourse in this matter that does not involve hiring an attorney or going to court.

The person is effectively a month to month tenant and needs to be served with a termination notice and notice to vacate. I believe this was just increased from 30 to 60 days in CA.
