Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

So I moved out of an apartment my family and I lived in for 2 years. I moved out in a hurry and expexted to pay for cleaning and what not as I have in the past. Having 2 kids our carpet was a little worn mostly downstairs in the livingroom. In our living room approximately 10x10, the management is claiming the carpet is so worn and soiled it must be replaced. and because they cannot replace a section (according to them) I am being charged to recarpet the entire apartment ! Which is $950 or so to go along with all the other charges on the bill, i now have an $1117 bill on my hands which includes my $100 security deposit already deducted out that I recieved when I moved in because of our good credit. Is this legal ? Is it my responsibility to pay for the entire carpet replacement eventhough the upstairs is fine ? They say they can't get pieces or do repairs, if one piece is bad the tennant gets charged for replacement. Please Help.

Just bring all your photographs that you took when you moved out to court with you, and there shouldn't be a problem.
