Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
We moved from our apartment and the manager was out of town so we left the keys, when she returned she sent us an email telling us everything looked great.
Yesterday we received a bill from the property management office for over $884.00 for new carpeting for a burn we did the size of a raisin, what can we do? They are also keeping our deposit to cover the cost of the carpet so the bill is for the remaining balance

If what you are saying is correct then you are going to need to file a lawsuit against the landlord and possibly go to court. Keep that email telling you that everything looked great; print it out for safe keeping. Find an attorney in your area that deals with landlord tenant law and find one that offers free consultation. Sounds like they wanted a new carpet and want you to pay the bill.
