Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I moved into a place that has 10 rooms, a few have their own bathroom, the rest are shared with an ajoining room.

The availability of a rental in this town at this time was impossible, and I could no longer afford to rent a hotel room, so I rented here. The problem I have is that there is no kitchen. we are aloud a small microwave and small fridge, only now they say we cannot have a refridgerator and must share with 9 other units in another room where there is a microwave, and large fridge, and a washer and dryer. Food is stolen on a regular basis, and waiting around to have your turn is getting old. Isn't this illeagal?
