Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

We are moving out of our apartment in Alameda, CA and feel we aren't being treated fairly by our landlord. We are in a month-to-month lease and put in our written 30 day notice to terminate that lease. Our rent due date is on the 1st of each month but we put in our 30 days so that it would end the 15th of August. So we only paid a prorated rent for August up until the 15th. Our landlord says they do not prorate on the move in or out. But they did prorate on the move in. I thought the law was they had to prorate in california but I could be wrong. Please help.

You only owe rent for 30-days after you give notice, unless you stay longer. The due date for the rent is irrelevant.
