If you are on a month-to-month lease, the landlord is entitled to rent from you for 30 days after you give notice, unless your agreement says otherwise. It doesn't matter if you move out early. If you have a lease for a term, such as six mos. or a year, the landlord is entitled to rent through the end of the lease, no matter when you move out or what notice you give, though they are obligated to try to re-rent the property if you move out early.

In California, if you are on a month to month lease, you need to give 30 days notice and pay the last 30 days rent.
