Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

negotiating for a sublet?

i just recently moved in an apartment with my roomate. she already has been living there 3 or so weeks and is fully qualified to live there on her own. however i need a place to stay and am helping out with some money. not even half of the rent. i went to the front office to give my information on my car for the parking lot, and they are angry she's subleting to me and told me i need to qualify for half the rent and need to be on the lease as well. however i do not think i will qualify. and when my roomate went to talk with management they basically told her theyre breaking the lease and she needs to find a new place in the next couple months. should we negotiate for a lease for what i am exactly responsible for, which is 500$ and nothing more. what can we do?

Re: negotiating for a sublet?

You will not getting anywhere negotiating. The apartment management will put you on the lease, and you'll be responsible for the entire amount if roommate defaults.

I do not see anything improper by management here. I can almost guarantee that your roomie violated her lease regarding subletting to you.

You should be out looking for what you can afford.
