Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I was given a notice to vacate by July 23, 2010 from my current residence of my 2 bedroom apt. I gave them a 30 day notice to be moved out by June 30th. When I called to make an appointment to get a walk thru time and date they advised me that I had to pay rent untill July 23. My question is because they gave me an eviction notice do they have the right to make me pay another month?

Please I need to know what My rights are as a tenant. I have paid for the month of June. Help.

It depends on whether you were on a month-to-month, or a lease. If you were on a month-to-month, you have the right to terminate on 30-days notice, and the fact that they gave you more time is irrelevant. If you were on a lease that expired on or later than July 23, however, you can't terminate it early just by giving a 30-day notice, regardless of whether they gave you a termination notice.
