Notice to Vacate

How do I as the tenant, fight a ''Notice to Vacate'' that I received today? I have lived in the same apartment for 8 years and I am trying to find out if there is any way to fight this and or not have to move in the 5 days the notice indicates I will have to, that was delivered by the Sheriff. Where can I look for potential options, if any, for me, the tenant, to defend myself against the Los Angeles Landlord?

If there's a sheriff's notice to vacate, that means that there's a judgment against you. If you never received court papers, you should find a tenants' lawyer immediately and move to set aside the judgment and default for lack of service. It appears that you live in LA, so rent stabilization might protect you from eviction(unless you failed to pay rent or created some nuisance). Didn't they first post a 3-day or 30-day notice, or hand it to you? Good luck.
