Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
notification
I have been renting a home for a year a 2 months. On Sept. 10 I received a phone call from a real estate agent who was hired by the owners of the home. He informed me that the house had been listed on the market and we were required to begin showing the house within 24 hours. I want to know if that is legal to do. Can the owners list the house and tell the tenants after the fact? Don't they have some legal obligation to tell us ahead of time of an impending sale? We were never contacted directly by the owners.

Re: notification
I am assuming that you are on a month to month rental agreement, rather than a lease with an expiration date.
The owner is not required to give you any advanced notice that they are going to sell the house. What they are required to do is give you 60 days notice of termination of the tenancy (because you have lived there more than 1 year). Furthermore, they are retired to give you 24 hours notice to show the property to prospective buyers "during normal business hours."
In any case, unless you are under a lease with an expiration date, you should plan on moving. Good luck.
