Partial repayment of Security Deposit

Our landlord has returned a portion of our security deposit, and we are disputing his retention of any of our money. May we deposit the uncontested amount, i.e. the portion he has returned to us, or will that seem as though we are accepting this in full and final settlement?

As long as the back of the check, (above where you endorse it), does NOT read paid in full.

If it does, do not cash it.
