Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I cannot pay my rent payment this month, but my church will pay it for me by writing a check to the landlord. Is this legal? She won't accept it, but this is the only way to make the payment because the church cannot write the check to me.

What will happen if she does not accept the church's check, I have no money to pay my rent, and the church cannot write the check to me?

help,

Shawna

I don't believe this should be a problem, so long as the church writes in the legend that the check is payment on your behalf for rent for the property, and identifies the rental unit. If the landlord harasses you because of this, you might seek out an attorney who is a member of the congregation to give the landlord a "what for"! The landlord should be happy she is getting the month's rent for the property, and on time.

If there's an issue because the landlord is of one faith and your church is of another and that's why she won't accept the payment, you might have a case for religious discrimination.
