Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I have this person who just moved out of my apartment (turned over keys 2 days ago after I threatened Domestic Violence RO... has already been arrested for hitting me). I'm the only one on the lease with no lease provisions to sublet, although landlord knew he was here for over a year and took rent from him directly once or twice. Person left property (clothes, etc) here when he told me that he'd be taking them. When he left, I was still asleep, so I didn't know that the stuff wasn't gone. Now I'm stuck storing these things and I don't know what to do. At some point, this stuff is abandoned. Can't find when that timeframe is in San Francisco (strict rental laws). Does someone know? Also, what can I legally charge for storage? I'm making a good-faith effort to get the stuff back to him, but am I beholden to his whims on the time and date when he wants it back?

Contact the rent board and perhaps the tenant's organizations to find out what the requirements are. You merely have to make reasonable efforts to return the items. Since the person was violent once, you should arrange something that you do noit need to be present when he or someone he designates gets the property back.
