Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
The Pope's candles left burning unattended in rental
After entering my rented condo to deliver my new tenant's mailbox key and check out the previously discussed shelves in her 14 year old son's new bedroom, I discovered two sets of three glass-enclosed burning candles on a plate, each with fruit, left on the carpeted floor in his closed bedroom.
I arrived at 9am and the occupants were gone to work/school, and not expected to return until evening.
I blew out the candles before I left the unit and have not yet discussed this safety hazard with my tenant. Neither of us has called the other.
I am unsure as to whether this was an effigy to the Pope or not, and even if it was, do I have the right to snuff out the candles to avoid a serious fire hazard, or was I over-stepping my bounds in regards to religion/religious practices as the landlord?

Re: The Pope's candles left burning unattended in rental
You have the right to enter into the unit at any time provided you give reasonable notice to enter at a reasonable time. You may also demand that the tenants do not use candles except in designated areas. YOu should put this in writing. Candles are a nuisance and a fire hazard, and you have the right to regulate them. If the tenants do not agree, you may evict them.
