Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My property mgmt company is refusing to provide me a copy of my new renewal lease for review until I provide them with proof of renter's insurance. My current lease does not require me to carry renter's insurance. Is this legal for them to refuse me access to the new renewal lease?

Yes. They are under no obligation to renew your lease when it runs out, and unless there is a notice requirement in your existing lease, they don't even have to tell you they are not renewing it. It just ends and you will be subject to eviction any time after that unless you and they agree on a renewal. Legally it is as if you were applying as a new tenant. So they can set any conditions they want on giving you a renewal lease for review or any other reason.
