Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I recently received a notice to vacate within 60 days from my landlord. I have found a new apartment and would like to move in immediately. Am I legally obligated to give my landlord 30 days notice if I would like to move out sooner than 60 days? Reading the law, it seems my only obligation is to be out of the apartment before the 60 days is up. Is that the case?

You don't have to wait until the 60 days is up to move. You need to be out by the end of 60 days.

Mr. Roach is correct as far as your physical occupancy. If, however, you want to stop paying rent in less than 60 days, you must give the 30-days notice and pay rent through those days, unless the landlord puts a new tenant in sooner.
