Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I recently signed a lease stating the move in date was December 3rd, however today is the 4th and I still do not have the keys, nor have they told me when I will actually receive the keys. I consequently have moved out of my old place and am having to stay with a relative. What can I do?

Chances are good that your lease has a provision that says you can't break the lease just because the unit isn't ready when planned. You are, however, entitled to a rent reduction on a per-day basis for the time you are not able to get in. Other than that, just keep bugging them about a move-in date. Eventually if the delay becomes unreasonable, you can break the lease and sue for damages. When that would be appropriate, however, depends on the terms of the agreement and details that would be too much to go into in this forum.
