Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I rent the bottom level of a large 3 story house.

(I have lived there for almost two years.)

It has no kitchen, but, it's own private bath , a sleeping room and office, with a private entry to the street.

I also have access through another main entry.

Throughout my tenancy, there were other tenants renting other rooms and suites .

The landlord has lived there too.

At one point, my landlord wrote me a letter, extending my lease to pay off his debt to me, by applying my rent to it.

Presently, the other tenants have left.

Am i now considered a lodger rather than a tenant?

Nope - there is consideration being paid for your occupancy. Though you are not paying rent, there is an exchange of consideration in the form of forgiveness of debt.
