Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Rent Raised
my mother-n-law has lived in her house for about 18 years. Her rent has always been $600 a month. The land lord never raised rent for her because he never did any renovations to the house so he said he wouldn't raise the rent. Then he passed away, 2 years later his wife raised the rent $200 more and all she did to the house was bring a man that was supposed to fix the cabinets in the kitchen and put in oven. The cabinets didn't work the very next day. Now she wants to fix the house up alittle and raise the rent another $200. There are many repairs needed, but she only wants to fix a few things. Is it against the law to raise the rent without any repairs to the house?

No!..Landlord (landlady) doesn't have to fix up the house, assuming there are no code violations.

She can raise the rent, otherwise. Your mother-in-law is not a prisoner. She can move.
