Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I rent a room in a house from my friends. I do not rent the whole house, just the room I stay in. They refuse to let me put a lock on this room's door. Are they not required by law to provide a lock to the room I rent from them? They say that installing it would raise fire insurance, but that just seems silly and made up.

It is silly and made up, since they have no obligation to let you put a lock on the door anyway. You're renting a room, not an apartment.
