Is it legal to ask for bank account information on a rental application?

It can be. If the landlord wants to check that you really but do have the money you claim to have to pay the rent it probably would be okay,but if you do not bring up that tissue it would be an invasion of privacy. But if you put up a big fuss, they probably will not rent to you. Just as they can not demand your Social Security Number.
