How much advance notice must a landlord give tenant prior to increasing monthly rent in california.

If you are on a month-to-month lease and are not subject to local rent control laws, then the landlord must normally give you 30 days notice of a rent increase. You should consult a local attorney regarding any possible rent control laws that might apply.

Generally, 30 days is sufficient; exceptions are if you are on a lease you must wait till the period ends, or if you are in a rent control area you must contact the rent control board to determine that. Also, if your rent increase, including any prior increases within the last year, exceeds 10% of the rental amount you must give 60 days notice.
