if a penalty is not mentioned in the lease agreement, what is the penalty for breaking apartment lease agreement?

You conceivably can owe the rent for the remaining term of the lease. The landlord, though, must exercise reasonable diligence in re-renting the apartment and credit you for that rent. You also can be charged for the cost of advertising and other related expenses. You can also help the landlord find a new tenant to mitigate the amount you might owe.

You might discuss this issue with the landlord and see if you can mutually agree on a plan to let you out of the lease.
