Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I rented a vacation home in Palm Desert for 2 months. After I signed the lease and made the first payment, the owner sold the house. She claimed the rental agreement was still valid and that the money was put in escrow. Two days after I arrived in Palm Desert and staying in the house, the new owners showed up unexpectedly and kicked me out of the house. The former owner claims she is not responsible anymore since she does not own the house. Meanwhile I'm out of pocket for the rent paid and stuck in Palm Desert.

You have two different issues. One is that the new owners can't kick you out. They probably knew it was being rented but in any case they either provide you notice or an unlawful detainer. At sale the old owner should have transferred rents to new owner. Your second issue is with old owner your best recourse is small claims. You may have to include the new owners so it can be sorted out

You paid for living there you were able to, one of them owes you the money back.. Maybe a demand letter from attorney might work.

They can't kick you out lawfully without proceeding with an unlawful detainer. An attorney would have to evaluate the exact chronology and facts to determine whether or not you had a case.
