Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My renter passed away and her sister who was living with her, is hospitalized and blind and has a social worker assigned to manage her affairs. My question to you ? The heirs came from east coast and left most of all their aunts possesions still in the rental way back since March of 2011. Their affairs I assume went to porbate court as the bank accounts are now unlocked and empty leaving the last months check worthless. My question to you, how can I legally have all their possesions offered to the family for return before I can finally legally dispose of all their clothing and boxes, etc. so I can remodel and get the unit rented out again ?

I am willing to pass on the unpaid rent as these renters were good, ad had been living there for over 30 years. I know I could store all their items at a storage facility but I would prefer not to have to do that.

thanks,

gw.

The answer to your question is long - the procedure for dealing with what is deemed to be "abandoned" property is set forth in California Civil Code Sections 1983 - 1991. Your best bet is to read through those - they actually contain the form of the notice you need to give, and then follow the procedure. Good luck - you are a nice guy for not going after unpaid rent.
