renter rights

What is the law regarding returning keys? Our lease ''terminated 7/31/06 without further notice''. our keys were returned through the drop slot in the door of the property management company approx. 8/14/06. There is nothing in our lease agreement about keys. Our landlord is trying to charge 2 weeks add'l rent. What are my rights?

Did you continue to occupy the property? Or did you completely vacate by the last day? If you were completely out but just didn�t turn the keys in, I would find it hard to believe the landlord would be able to recover the 2 weeks of rent.
